38th UOB Painting of the Year
Driven by a passion to encourage talented artists in their creative pursuits, United Overseas Bank (UOB) started the Painting of the Year competition in Singapore in 1982. Today, the annual art competition is the longest-running in Singapore and one of the most prestigious in Southeast Asia.

Held in four countries in the region - Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - the UOB Painting of the Year competition has helped to discover many talented emerging artists and recognise several established professionals who have contributed significantly to the development of the Southeast Asian art scene.

The visual identity for each
year changes, always based on the winning painting for the year before. In this case, it is based on 2018's painting entitled Angs’t (ANGST) by Indonesian artist, Suvi Wahyudianto.

Angs’t (ANGST) narrates a personal experience and collective social memory towards conflicts, focusing on the important role of empathy. To the artist, despite our racial and cultural differences, we are essentially the same.

This artwork thus evokes our sense of empathy towards the lives of innocents in the face of conflict and symbolises the hope that someday, the thick wall that separates us from seeing and treating each other as equal human beings will come down.

Creative Idea: Binding Communities
An enabler of the Unity imperative, and by having interests, experiences, feelings, and a vision for a shared future in common, groups of people in society can be better bound as a stronger body.

We do this by uncovering and amplifying the social values, responsibilities, behavioural ethics and joyful things that become the glue between us and a catalyst for harmony, happiness and inspired society. "As long as the ties that bind us together are stronger than those that would tear us apart, all will be well."

Below are the other explorations of the logo that were influenced by the idea of unity – of people being brought together, is a powerful, and, uniting cause. It is an aspiration sought by any and all leaders - from businesses to communities to groups with stated shared interests. It’s a perfect rallying call for SE Asian artists to contribute to a collective vision for a more artful world. This is the opposite of being divided, and talks to a oneness between and amongst us which serves to inspire and strengthen those who see the courage to commit and participate - whether in art, society, and humanity. Hence, I've explored using knots and overlays as a symbolic representation to convey unity.
